Mushers, officials and volunteers will see two changes at the Midnight Run checkpoint in Chatham for 2023. Well still be at the MSU Experimental Farm so many things will be familiar. However, a change to the Midnight Run rules and a personnel change will impact us all.

Increase to the Race Purse
The Upper Peninsula Sled Dog Association at its 9/14 meeting voted to increase the Dryland Dash purse by $500 to now total $2500. This was done so mushers, many of whom have long distances to come, have a better chance of winning at least some gas money to offset the current prices. Register for the race here.

The entire UPSDA family mourns the loss of of our friend Patty Holman, who passed away on Saturday, July 30 in Marquette. Patty was a long time volunteer and ran our Silent Auction for many years. Her positive spirit and enthusiasm will be missed by all of us. We will post more information as it becomes available.

Ever wondered what its like to stay awake for 36 hours straight while driving all over Marquette and Alger Counties while it snows? Well, Brenda Ransom has been doing just that for almost 30 years and she can tell you all about it. Brenda is one of the 800 volunteers that make the UP200, Midnight Run and Jack Pine 30 a reality every year. She volunteers as a judge drivertaking the race marshal to checkpoints and wherever else they may need to go during the race and shes perfected her role over the decades. Brenda shared this firsthand account of her experience as a driver.

Need a sled dog fix this summer? Youre in luck because musher Laura Neese is opening MI Dog in Newberry, MI on May 28, 2022. Her new summer sled dog experience will give visitors a chance to learn about dog sledding and meet her team of dogs, including dogs that finished the Iditarod and the Yukon Quest. Laura works and races for Natures Kennel and shes run the UP200 and Midnight Run many times.
