Breakaway's Blog!

Hello and welcome to my new supercool DOGBLOG! All us cool dogs have one. I'm the race reporter for the U.P. 200 & Midnight Run Sled Dog Races.

My name is Breakaway, and I'm an Alaskan Malamute with a special feature. My fur is longer than normal so I'm known as a "Wooly" Malamute. This longer fur is very soft and warm so I really like cold weather. I was born in Midland, Michigan but have lived all my 4 years in Marquette, Michigan. My favorite time of year is winter. My owners named me "Breakaway" and my brother "Blueline" because they are big hockey fans. Like most Malamutes, I'm very proud and quite the 'chick magnet'. I also LOVE kids.

Us Malamutes or "Mals" as we are often called, are not fast running race dogs, like the Alaskan and Siberian huskies are. We tend to go slow so people can admire how good we look. My ancesters were used for hauling heavy loads in sleds and they were definitely hard workers.
Can't wait to meet everyone at the Race Headquarters in the Holiday Inn this February! I'll tell you all about the sled dogs who are entered in the U.P. 200 and the Midnight Run sled dog races. But PLEASE - Don't bring your pets to the races. Sled Dogs are very nervous before the race and they need to focus on the race. They even get attitudes!

Uh-oh, I hear another female dog barking for me (told you I was a chick magnet). If you want to leave me a comment or ask me a question, please send me an email at breakaway@up200.org. See you at the races!

Your new Bud,
Breakaway

Hey Breakaway,
Looking forward to seeing you and Blueline in February ...
Your relatives are training and planning to come for a visit. We'll be occupied most of Saturday and likely exhausted by evening. Stop by the the Jack Pine finish line to say high. ... We'll be the ones bringing in the trail markers.
Signed;
Your buddies at Snoshire

HI BREAKAWAY, We really liked your cool picture and your blog. Sure wish our mom would set one up for us! We like to watch the start of the race on TV but sure wish we could be there. Our dad has said he would like to have a racing team but we say NO WAY!! We like our attention TOO much besides there is no extra room in bed. Take care and enjoy the races. skyler, charlie, junior & BADDOG

Whoa! I just heard from the ladies at Wright Street Dental! They said: "We wish your mom would bring you around more often!! We really love to see you and your brother!
Merry Christmas!
Big hugs,
The ladies at Wright Street Dental."

I'll have to tell my brother Blueline that we need to somehow acquire our owners' toothbrushes and chew them. Thats the only way I can think of to get them to take us to the dental office. Hmmmm, you think this will work?

This is our first visit to the UP200, the Midnight Run and the JackPine 30. Our son is a junior at NMU and is trying to volunteer!
Where do YOU recommend watching the races?
Good Luck to all the mushers and their teams.

You are in for a real treat. I recommend you start in Gwinn at the start of the Midnight Run. This race starts at 6:00 pm near Larry's Supermarket. After that, drive on in to Marquette and try to position yourselves close to the front of the Mining Journal office on Washington Street. The starting chute for the U.P. 200 is there and you can hear the announcers as they start off the distance racers. If that spot is too crowded, move down towards the lake on Washington Street where another speaker is set up. This is where you will see the most spectacular sled dog race start in the U.S. Stop in at the HQ during your stay and say hello!

Love - Breakaway

Hi Breakaway - You are such a handsome boy, Blueline too. I think your Mom and Dad need to put up a picture of our two "favorite local celebrity boys" in the Dental Office....maybe in Mom's office too.
