Mushers finishing the race in positions 18 through 21 completed the race in Deerton, MI due to safety concerns. They were credited with full completion of the running.

Each year the Upper Peninsula Sled Dog Association presents the Tom Cooley Award, which is voted upon by the race veterinarians, and the Tom Porn Sportsman's Award (voted on by the mushers). Tom Cooley was the first UP 200 veterinarian who tragically died in a lodge fire. His widow provides $500.00 annually for the award. Dr. Tom Porn was the first 'official' photographer, and a past board member who succumbed in a scuba diving accident. This year's Tom Cooley Award was presented to Minnesota musher Keith Aili in the U.P. 200, and the Tom Porn Sportsman's Award went to Minnesota musher Rebekah Chapman.

The Grand Marais Historical Society added a new award for the 2005 running of the U.P. 200. The “first musher” award recipient was given a handmade ceramic trophy, a framed historical photo of a turn-of-the- century musher, and a gift of $100 courtesy of the Historical Society. This award went to the first musher to reach Grand Marais during the race . That musher in the 2005 running was Wyoming’s Frank Teasley.
