Young Midnight Run Photographer Creates UP Music Video

April 4, 2018

Deanna DeValve, a senior at Marquette High School, volunteered to photograph the Midnight
Run finish and awards banquet. Deanna and her mom met UPSDA President Darlene Walch at
the UPSDA presentation about sled dog racing held at Peter White Public Library. Deanna
asked permission to take photographs of the presentation because she was working on a music
video. It was that chance meeting which led Deanna, her Dad and older sister to become
volunteers at the UPSDA sled dog races.
The DeValve family had just moved to the Upper Peninsula so Deanna and her mom toured the
region capturing video for Deanna’s project. Deanna wrote the lyrics and began composing a
melody on the piano. A friend with a recording studio in his basement helped create the music,
recorded her singing the song and together they finalized the music. Deanna then added the
video clips she’d collected to complete the project. By mid-March the music video “In The UP”
was done.
“In the UP” earned Deanna a spot in the Sing It UP contest at The UP North Lodge in Gwinn on
Saturday, April 7, 2018 where she will sing and play the piano on another original song.
